THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on October 11 begin a three-day industrial action in solidarity with their members in the five Southeastern state universities who have been on strike for about two months.
Addressing reporters in Enugu, ASUU President Ukachukwu Awuzie said the union was unhappy with the refusal of the governors to resolve their differences with the teachers.
He said it was wrong for other universities to continue with academic activities when their colleagues in the zone remained at home.
The solidarity strike will be the first in a series of actions which would later follow unless the teachers demands are met, he said.
Awuzie, who painted a sad picture of the situation in all the universities in the zone, said in Abia State University, staffing was dismal as a result of government policy not to attract or retain a certain number of workers.
He said for a student population of about 30, 000, the university has only 63 professors of whom only 32 were permanent staff.
