Jonathan Campaigner Quits Over President's Comment On October 1st Bomb Blast caption: Goodluck Jonathan And Namadi Sambo By SaharaReporters, New York President Goodluck Jonathan’s reelection campaign suffered a major blow on Thursday as a leading figure in his campaign movement resigned in anger, citing the president’s comment on the October 1 bomb blast as reason. A day after the incident, which left 25 people dead and several others injured, Jonathan had said the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, was not responsible for the blast, although the militant group repeatedly claimed responsibility for the bombing.  Nasir Abubakar, who was until his resignation was the Kebbi State Coordinator of the "Goodluck Support Group", one of the numerous groups making up the Goodluck/Namadi Campaign Organization, said he could not in good conscience continue to supp

Nigerian Samuel Adeloju Invents Buoyancy Bazooka Which Could Save Lives At Sea-CNET Adeloju's Bazooka-(Credit: Samuel Adeloju/James Dyson Award)   By Juniper Foo So simple, yet so brilliant. Designer Samuel Adeloju's clever little idea of a life-saving ring that can be "shot" out to a drowning victim beyond the reach of a simple toss, has won him A$16,000 in the James Dyson Award against 14 finalists. The international design award aims at inspiring young people to design something that solves a problem. Given that Adeloju hails from surf-happy Australia, one can guess at the inspiration floating his boat. The Longreach Buoyancy Deployment System works on the idea of a bazooka-like device that can fire a condensed bullet of hydrophobic foam up to 150m away, which then expands up to 40 times its size in water within a snappy 15 seconds. The kit is designed to be portable for

Gov. Amaechi's Tenure Ends May 2011, Court Rules caption: Rotimi Amaechi By SaharaReporters, New York A federal high court judge in Abuja, Justice Ibrahim Auta, has ruled that the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, must leave the position of governor next May. Amaechi was installed by the Supreme Court in October 2007 in a bizarre judgement in which the court stated that he was eligible to be governor having won the party primaries. He was asked to take over from Celestine Omehia as a party candidate. In explaining the ruling, the Supreme Court stated that it is the party that contests elections and that the PDP won the gubernatorial elections, and that, consequently, Amaechi, being the rightful candidate, should assume power as governor. That argument used by the Supreme Court was at play today in Justice Auta's court where he ruled that since

The president also assured of government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians and foreigners. A minute silence was observed in honour of those who died in the explosions. A committee is to be set up by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Yayale Ahmed, to probe the lapses in the celebrations. These included the alleged embarrassment caused the President with the plaque meant for the Briton, Lillian Jean Williams, who wrote

ASUU to begin solidarity strike Oct 11 By Chris Oji, Enugu   Nat President ASUU, Awuzie (L) at a news conference THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on October 11 begin a three-day industrial action in solidarity with their members in the five Southeastern state universities who have been on strike for about two months. Addressing reporters in Enugu, ASUU President Ukachukwu Awuzie said the union was unhappy with the refusal of the governors to resolve their differences with the teachers. He said it was wrong for other universities to continue with academic activities when their colleagues in the zone remained at home. The solidarity strike will be the first in a series of actions which would later follow unless the teachers demands are met, he said. Awuzie, who painted a sad picture of the situation in all the universities in the zone, said in Abia State University, staffing w

BENUE State Governor Gabriel Suswam Wednesday described the call for President Goodluck Jonathan’s resignation by Northern Political Leaders Forum as “arrant nonsense”. He said former Finance Minister Adamu Ciroma and other leaders of G-15 are out to create confusion. Suswam, who condemned the G-15 leaders last night in Abuja, warned against returning Nigerian democracy to “ground zero”. He said: “That (the call for resignation), to me, is arrant nonsense. You know, if there is a security situation, one would expect that people should join hands and address the problem. We are all stakeholders; the President is a stakeholder, just like any other person. The President is not a magician. “I don’t think most of these people who are talking can even talk on behalf of their own states because we know them. I think we should not as leaders of this country be making statements that will disunite us. “I think such statements are bent on creating a lot of confusion in this country. If you have

Jonathan is undeterred as Abuja bomb row grows... Middle: President Jonathan, (L) VP Sambo and (R) Dame Patience at the  Independence Day celebration THE President took the battle to his opponents’ camp Wednesday. He rejected the call for him to throw in the towel over his handling of the October 1 bombings and threw blows at those who are politicising the tragedy. President Goodluck Jonathan was replying to the comments of the Northern Political Leaders Forum, led by former Finance Minister Adamu Ciroma. His campaign organisation also attacked former Military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida over his comments on the incident. Gen. Babangida promptly reacted in Minna, describing as "idiotic" any attempt to link him with the Abuja blast. He also cleared his Campaign chief, Dr Raymond Dokpesi, who is undergoing interrogation in connection with the incident. No fewer than 12 persons died in the twin-blast; 36 others were injured. In Abuja, the
