Land Grab: Violence Erupt At Ogheghe Community in Egor LGA of Edo State
Residence of Ogheghe Community in Edo State woke up to a shocking scene of violence in their community when some of the community boys aka, "area boys" who usually go around demanding for community development levies and land grabbing succeeded in matchetting a woman to her death identified as Mrs F. Ogbeide (Nee Omosigho).
It was learnt that the gruesome incidence happened after the "area boys" traced the victim to her home, when an altercation with the deceased's son and family members occurred in connection with a feud with the family regarding a landed property belonging to the Ogbeides'. Eye witnesses said the fracas has been on for a while, but that on Saturday 28th February 2015, events escalated when the gang engaged one of the sons of the deceased in a brutal fight leading to the son sustaining severe injuries. It is alleged that the woman's son engaged one of the area boys in a fight and in trying to defend himself injured the gang leader and has been on the run. In obvious retaliation, the gang traced the deceased to her home and ended her life.

When contacted, one of the children of the woman (name withheld) narrated thus:
"The land is my family land and we left it for some years because the road leading to the place was bad, but after the road was worked upon, our family decided to start developing the land, One day we came to work on our land as the worker's were working, some community boy's came and started beaten up the workers and they also succeeded in destroying already erected blocks of the building and even took away most of the workers tools like head pans, shovels etc. After committing the dastardly act, they left and threatened to come the following day. The incidence was reported to my elder brother David who then went there the following day to ensure the workers worked without any disturbance. Few minutes after the boys started to work, the same boy's came again, my brother tried to calm them down and tried to explain that the land was our family land. Before you could say jack, they started to beat him up, they asked what gave him the guts to stand up to them and also who authorized him to work in the community without proper settlement. They began to beat him up with wood and cutlass and succeeded in injuring his head and injuring his arm and legs. You needed to see my brother, there was blood covering him all over. It was God who saved him because he was able to escape them. In the process some ran after him and the report is that he broke one of their head with wood in the bush. I don't have the details for that. But my brother was taken to the hospital to be treated. Do you know they still traced him to the hospital to try to kill him? Even after he returned from the hospital they went to his workshop, because he works as an auto repairer. They dragged him out beat him up, injured his mouth and even broke his teeth. He was rushed again to the same hospital just after few days of being treated because is the only reasonable hospital in the community. So you can see? My brother was still being treated for injuries sustained when they came to our house to matchet my mother as a revenge."
The village is now in a mourning state and the police has been called in to wade into the matter. Let us hope the perpetrators will be apprehended in the nearest possible time.
